Westport Triathlon 15 June 2013

Westport Triathlon Club will be hosting their annual race again and we hope you can all come back and improve your times since last year.

We hope to make the Westport Triathlon 2013 a great day to remember. We have energetic support from our sponsers and partners. The goody bags are filling up with some great treats and our prizes are also being put together.

You can enter as an individual or as a team. Post race showers and hot food will be free of charge for competitors after the race, which is 2 min from transition and the car park. We are also keeping the low price of €35, so you will have more money to reward yourself afterwards.

The competitors

Remember you can enter individually or as a team. If you are entering as a team, you will need a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner. All competitors must have a Triathlon Ireland license, if you don’t have one you can buy a 1 day license, but this must be done in advance before the race through the Triathlon Ireland website as ee cannot issue licenses.

The cost

The cost to enter our Triathlon Ireland sanctioned race is €35. So for that price, drop down to Westport and compete in one of the most scenic races in the country.

The course

The Westport Triathlon is a sprint distance triathlon based around Westport Quay and Clewbay. The race is in its fourth year now and it is getting more and more popular. The 750m swim is based around the point in Westport. This is followed by a 20K cycle on an out and back route along coast road to Croagh Patrick, take in the stunning views of Clew bay on the way! Then last but not least, a 5 k run thought the scenic grounds of Westport House.

The goodies

We are working very hard to give competitors nice goodie bags. We are sourcing samples of supplements, race nutrition, recovery foods and massage gels. We have had a great response from local businesses who have helped bulk up our prizes.

We have entered all competitors into a raffle and prizes will be given for those present at the prize giving.

All competitors will also be given a token towards a hot meal after the race.

We will also have photographers roaming around on the day, so get your photo taken with your friends/supporters and we will post it online for you.

What’s happening?Members Signup Westport Triathalon Club is a sub group of Westport Covey Wheelers. Basic membership for Westport Triathalon Club/Westport Covey Wheelers is €30.
There are 2 options to pay for this basic membership.Option 1
We have a dual registration night with the Covey Wheelers on Wed 16th Jan in Scoil Padraig from 6:30pm before the spinning class. This may be a better option especially if you want to cycle in any capacity (leisurely or racing)with the Westport Covey Wheelers during the year as you need to purchase a cycling Ireland licence also.
So on Wednesday night you can pay your basic €30 for club membership and also pay for your cycling Ireland licence if you want to do any cycling with the Westport Coveys.
There are 3 types of licenses: (all prices below include the €30 basic membership).
1- Open Race €155 this covers all races and championships.

2. Club Competition €90 – this allows you enter Club League, Mayo league, Connaught League, restricted entry to our own Open Races.

3. Leisure €55 – General club cycles on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

Option 2
Go onto the Triathlon Ireland website and pay the €30 by following the appropriate links. You can also then purchase your Triathlon Ireland annual Licence which is beneficial to those who plan to compete in more than 3 Triathlon events this season (see below for more details).

NOTE: IT IS MORE BENEFICIAL FOR THE CLUB IF PEOPLE USE OPTION 1 AS TRIATHALON IRELAND TAKE 4% PER TRANSACTION FOR THE BASIC CLUB MEMBERSHIP OF €30.

Triathalon Ireland Licence
If you plan on doing any triathalons during the year (sprint or olympic) you need to get a Triathalon Ireland Licence.
If you are planning on competing in more than 3 triathlalon events, it is financially more beneficial to buy a yearly licence (€53), which allows you to do as many triathalon events as you wish. This can be purchased via the Triathlon Ireland website
Otherwise, a one day licence can be purchased per event (€15).

We urgently need a Race Director for our Triathlon on June the 15th. Contact westporttriathlonclub@gmail.com if you have any interest.

Swimming

The next Swim block starts this Tuesday (8th of January) at 6:30 early o clock am. This block will run for 6 weeks* at a cost of €60 for both Tuesday and Friday mornings and €40 just one morning per week. Feel free to share a session with another member by attending alternative mornings.
*Club membership is required after 3 training sessions for insurance purposes.

Pool Membership

The Westport Leisure Park are kindly offering a reduced membership for Westport Triathlon Club and Covey Wheeler members .
15+ members €250 for 12 months for full gym/pool/sauna (current rate €350)
10-15 members €280 for 12 months for full gym/pool/sauna
The Leisure park also offer a pay as you go option. For €100 you get 25 swim/gym visits.

Spinning Classes & Circuit Training

Covey Wheelers Spinning Classes start back on Wednesday 9th in Scoil Padraig. 2 classes 7-8pm & 8-9pm. €50 for 8 weeks. Prebooking is essential. Arrive 10mins early to set up bikes.

Circuit Training also resumes this Mon 7th Jan with Jason O’Brien focusing on bike specific strength and conditioning exercises.

Classes start at 6:45pm Prebooking is required as the last class was over subscribed. €30 for 6 sessions

Bike fasterOur cycle sessions are Saturday and Sunday mornings meeting at the Town Clock at 8.45am. There are usually three groups which do different pace, duration and distances so everyone is catered for.
As a member of Westport Triathlon Club you are also a member of the Covey Wheelers, but you must take out a cycling Ireland licence to insure yourself and them from any potential accidents.

Run faster

We train on a Tuesday and on a Thursday evening at 7.30 usually at the Athletics Track on Horkan’s Hill and Teagasc Car park for the Greenway.

Gerry is an Athletics Ireland coach . He has vast experience under his belt.
€2 charge per night.

Con Doherty wins bronze at ITU Junior World Championships

Doherty makes the podium at World Championships

In what is another first for triathlon in Ireland, Mayo youngster Con Doherty has claimed a bronze medal, earning his way onto the podium at the ITU Junior Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. The result is a breakthrough for the Westport teenager who is the current National Junior Champion.

Doherty exited the 750m swim in the Queens Wharf Harbour mid pack in the field of 75 junior men. His superior bike handling skills became instantly apparent as Doherty biked his way to the front of the field on the first of the four-laps, 20k bike course. Taking in a number of technical turns and challenging inclines around Auckland’s city centre, the course suited the fearless Doherty, who despite treacherous rain, set the pace for his competitors and led the race for the majority of the bike leg.

Heading out on the 5k run course in the lead, Doherty was overtaken by South African Wian Sullwald who stride ahead. Despite fighting off an attack from Frenchman Simon Viain for the majority of the run, Doherty was outsprinted in the final metres of the race to finish in a fantastic third place in a time of 1:01:59.

The result is a breakthrough for Doherty whose best result prior to today is a Top 10 at the European Cup level. One cannot help but think it is the first of many to come for the talented triathlete. Doherty is just 17, with two further years in the 16-19 year old junior category. In addition, Doherty is the first Irish junior, and indeed the first Irish triathlete to podium in a World Championship Series Final event.

Triathlon Ireland Performance Director Chris Jones was delighted with the result, saying “this is a fantastic performance from Con, and it comes well ahead of the 2014 target we had set for a Junior World Championship result such as this”. The result is a great achievement, and comes off the back of a great deal of development work that has been done by Triathlon Ireland and its coaching staff.

TI elite Aileen Morrison summed up the result well, tweeting “Guts, Balls, No Fear, No Brakes”. It was an apt description.

Sheeffry 10k Fun Run – 21/07/2012

The first ever, AAI approved, Sheeffry Pass 10k fun run/jog/walk takes place at Drummin, Westport, on Saturday July 21st. Sign on from 5:30pm at St. Mary’s Church, Drummin, Westport, for a 7pm start. €15 entry.

Athletics Association Ireland rules apply. Enter on the day or pre book at www.RunIreland.com
Meanwhile the 2012 Tour de Sheffrey takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend with a family orientated programme of events.

Saturday the 04th of August 2012: Kids 5 & 10k Tour De Sheeffry leisure cycles. Sign on from St. Marys Church, Drummin, Westport, Co. Mayo from 12 noon for a 12:30pm Start. This event is aimed at national school children and their families. This is open to everyone. €3 entry. Cycling helmet is compulsory. Cycling Ireland rules apply.

Sunday the 05th of August 2012: Our annual 52k Tour De Sheeffry leisure cycle. Sign on from Heratys Bar, Drummin, Westport, Co. Mayo from 10am for an 11am start. €10 entry. Suitable for all levels of cycling ability. Cycling helmet is compulsory. Cycling Ireland rules apply.

Following the main 52k Tour De Sheeffry on Sunday we are hosting a Family fun day at Heratys Bar, Drummin Westport, Co. Mayo. Family Scavenger Hunt, Sheep Shearing, Human Tractor Pulling and more.
